Cyber Law

Course Overview

This course covers how the law and cybersecurity work together. We studied topics like online privacy, freedom of speech, cybercrime laws, and how the government investigates computer crimes. I also learned about important laws like the Fourth Amendment, the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act, and the GDPR.
This class was very beneficial for my job as a cybersecurity consultant. I work with different medical device manufacturers to ensure that their products comply with FDA guidance and improve patient safety. Learning the laws made it easier for me to understand the risks and how to protect sensitive data between different regulatory agencies. It also made me feel more prepared to discuss security and legal issues with my colleagues at work.

Projects

Here are some of the projects I worked on in the course.

Project 1: Search and Seizure Warrant

For this project, I completed a federal search and seizure warrant and wrote a short affidavit for a cybercrime case involving stolen digital data. I explained the location, type of evidence, and legal reason for the search. This gave me a better understanding of how digital evidence is used in real investigations, which connects directly to my work in cybersecurity compliance.

Project 2: First Amendment Freedoms and Protections, The Cyber World, and You

In this project, I responded to a set of reflection questions about the First Amendment in the digital age. I discussed how I access and share information online, the role of government and private platforms in moderating harmful content, and a real example of free speech issues on a college campus. The project helped me think about how digital tools affect public debate, free expression, and democracy.
