Week 4 – Journal Entry

Maslow’s Pyramid of Needs

Maslow’s Pyramid of Needs relates significantly with my experiences with technology. Basic needs, safety, sense of belonging and self-actualization can all be achieved and enhanced through technology. Technology provides tools and mechanisms that help improve our mental health and privacy needs. Smartphones include features that make like very inconvenient like GPS navigation, online food ordering, and security systems to ensure our safety. Encryption and secure passwords are additional measures that protect our data and financial resources, directly addressing our need for safety and security. Technology makes it easier to move up Maslow’s hierarchy.

Self-esteem can be increased by using platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn to help nurture relationships and build networks. These platforms promote a sense of belonging and community while also increasing self-confidence through opportunities for recognition and achievement. At the individual level, digital resources provide learning and creativity, which promote accomplishment; online courses, digital art tools, and platforms for sharing projects allow people to grow personally while receiving feedback faster than ever. In general, technology interacts with each of the levels of Maslow’s hierarchy by enhancing our ability to meet a wide range of needs, from survival to growth and fulfillment.
