Like everything else in life, movies and TV shows totally warp our ideas about hackers. They always make it look like hacking takes a few clicks and suddenly you’re inside a government database. The reality is very different as hacking is slow and methodical, and requires serious expertise. But thanks to Hollywood, most people think it’s all about flashing lights and someone wearing a hoodie in a dark room typing really fast. I feel like this misrepresentation makes cybersecurity seem either overly scary or ridiculously easy. The real world of cybersecurity is so much more complex with most of the focus on prevention protecting networks and ethical hacking, which doesn’t always make for exciting TV but it’s crucial.
