Matthew Stone ODU 2024 fall
This is my ranking of the motives for cybercrime based on the linked articles:
1. For Money: Financial gain is the most straightforward and universally understood
motive, making it highly logical.
2. Revenge: This motive resonates due to emotional and personal contexts that drive
individuals to harmful actions.
3. Political: Hacktivism reflects strong convictions, making this motive meaningful for
those wanting to effect change.
4. Recognition: Many hackers seek peer acknowledgment, which can drive notable acts,
though it feels less serious than others.
5. Entertainment: Engaging in cybercrime for fun seems less justified, as it can lead to real
harm without a clear motive.
6. Boredom: This is a weak motive; engaging in harmful acts simply due to boredom lacks
depth or understanding.
7. Multiple Reasons: While valid, this motive is less distinct and relies on varying factors,
making it harder to assess individually.
Each ranking is caused by the seriousness and easiness to understand the motive behind the
crime.
