The criminal justice system has evolved to not only face off against real world threats, but also the threats that loom in the cyber crime area. Technology has opened new doors for criminals to stay anonymous when committing a crime online and sometimes even getting away with it. Cyber crime is on a whole new level when it comes to the stakes. Because someone can steal 100s if not 1,000s of data at once, just on one device. This brings a new threat to the table. We also see identity theft take place more online, with someone posing as someone who they really aren’t. We’ve seen instances of fraud online. And committing a crime just seems more enticing online because you can stay anonymous when committing the crime. Harassment has even found its home online with a majority of them taking place on social media platforms.

Technology has enabled these kinds of behaviors and reactions because with the internet being a cesspool of bad behavior and bad takes, people can always have a fresh start just by making a new profile. Appropriate behavior online is doing the normal things of searching for stuff online, to going on Amazon and ordering stuff. Leaving nice comments and posting new pictures on your page, now that’s some nice behavior. Inappropriate behavior… Oh where to begin. This can range from leaving very mean comments, to sexually harassing someone online. There are more online offenders of these kinds of behavior online more than ever.. And that’s scary.

So, this may sound very outlandish or even ridiculous. But cyber warfare is a real thing. Cyber war is the use of digital attacks. Like the use of viruses and malware to affect someones computer. This can be used by another country or just by some random person. Majority of cases that are classified as cyber warfare are other countries using malware against another country. And this is scary because if something like this gets out of hand, it can incite real-world warfare. Examples range from shutting down airports, to affecting a cities power grid. Even attacking the economy can be done from a computer, essentially pulling off the biggest cyber bank job ever.

In order to combat everything I just stated, this is why policies are created. To prevent these kinds of events from happening, so that those who commit the crime get what they deserve; justice. Yet, creating policies is a very hard thing to do due to how ever evolving technology grows. And when making these policies you cannot just guess when these kinds of attacks will happen. It can happen at any moment, or if the attack is even a capable thing. No company or politician can predict what could happen, that’s why a companies security network matters, so that these kinds of things don’t happen. Yet, we still need these policies to combat outside threats to companies so that they don’t have to look over their shoulder everyday hoping that they don’t get attacked.
