My main job as a network technician is to monitor the classrooms across campus for proper connection to online class sessions. Digital Learning at Old Dominion has made the process extremely easy over the last few years. We are mainly using Cisco systems to broadcast all of our classes that we support. We specialize in using room systems that are compatible with Zoom and Cisco Webex. What I do with these systems is listen to the broadcast team below me and if any problems arise I step into our systems and troubleshoot these problems.
Our main problem happens to be the calls dropping randomly from the room. Much of this can be either user error from the teacher or the network failing in the class which can be more difficult to diagnose. Stepping into a classroom full of college students can be pretty stressful when they are all counting on you to fix the problem. This has given me the skill to work under pressure. We make sure to test these rooms and connections extensively whenever students are on break but we sometimes still run into these problems.
Response time is also tested during this time. Having a class down for more than a few minutes can hinder the education of the students online that can’t be there in person to watch the class. It also poses a problem to the recordings that are later posted online. Learning how to react fast and come up with the solution on the spot is one of the greatest traits I have gained since working here
