Storing information about individuals in this day in age is generally the smart and safe thing to do with your information. With all security measures in place it is rare that your information gets leaked. With that being said there are four main ethical issues that can arise when storing this information. These four issues are Privacy, Security, Access, and Accuracy. The first issue, privacy, is arguably the most important when it comes to storing people’s information electronically. People are trusting a software program or a certain device to protect their information so who is to say that the person on the other end is not “spying” on you or using your information for malicious reasons. It is important that the correct safeguards in place to ensure there is not a security breach or any type of leak. If there is one, it is important that the client is notified immediately to take whatever action is necessary. The second ethical issue is security. An ethical problem can arise if the correct security measures are not taken when dealing people’s information. Keeping personal information makes it so that people target the organization and can lead to a security breach. Another ethical issue is access or accessibility. The main ethical dilemma in this situation is who should have access to people’s personal data? Should it be people with upper level degrees who have the knowledge to possibly induce a cyber attack or should it be left in the hands of a trained employee working at a data center because they most likely do not have the knowledge to steal people’s information. Most commonly access is only given to people who need to know this type of information, an example could be a police office or detective or a medical professional. Controlling who has access is pretty essential to ensure data is protected. The last ethical issue is accuracy. This problem could be easily overlooked in my opinion if people are not careful or if the wrong people have access to the data. If there are any inaccuracies and or errors with the electronic data this poses much bigger issues. For example, if two people have the same name but different date of births and the data is entered incorrectly one or both people have the possibility of being misdiagnosed in a hospital or you might not be able to have access to a life insurance policy if the beneficiaries name is wrong. It is important all stored information is accurate and there should be routine monitoring to ensure information stays up to date. There are many ethical dilemmas when it comes to electronic storage keeping, these are only some of them that I have touched on. As electronics advance and we continue to go digital on more and more things, more ethical dilemmas are bound to arise. How we deal with them is what is important.
