The NIST Cybersecurity Framework

The NIST framework is a set of guidelines that offers organizations risk management by providing a structured approach to identifying, assessing, managing, and preventing cybersecurity risks. Organizations can benefit from this because it helps them better understand potential threats and implement safeguards to mitigate the, which leads to informed decisions to maximize cybersecurity investments. In my future career,  I would use the NIST framework to asses and organization’s security, continuously cycling through the identify, protect, detect, respond, and recover functions to ensure the organization total protection. I would then select a tier based on the company’s needs and data sensitivity, then develop a security profile with an action plan.

Ethical Considerations of CRISPR Gene Editing

I think that one of the more pressing ethical concerns surrounding gene editing is the potential for discrimination. As gene editing technologies are still in the beginning stages, they are likely to be very expensive, which means that only those with substantial financial resources will be able to access them. This creates a dangerous divide, where the wealthy can potentially “enhance” their genetic makeup, leaving disadvantaged people with no access to these advancements. Additionally, the advantage of gene editing could lead us dangerously close to the concept of eugenics, which already has a dark history since it has been used to justify discriminatory practices against people with disabilities, people of different races, and those deemed to have “undesirable” genetic traits. Gene editing could be seen as a modern day extension of these harmful ideologies, allowing people of even governments to make decisions about who is deemed “fit” or “unfit” based on genetic characteristics. This could lead to the marginalization and stigmatization of those who are genetically different, perpetuating harmful stereotypes and reinforcing societal prejudices. With gene editing, there is a real risk that we could open the door to a future where genetic “perfection” is pursued at the cost of diversity and what it means to be human, so we must approach gene editing with caution and ensure that it is not used to reinforce discrimination or exacerbate existing social inequalities.

Opportunities for Workplace Deviance

Workplace deviance is when an employee behaves in a way that violates the policies or norms of an organization or its members. This includes things like cyberbullying, cyberloafing, sabotage, accessing unauthorized information, and other cybercrimes. As the world increasingly depends on technology,  there are more opportunities to engage in deviant behavior in the workplace. Cyberloafing, for example, is using work resources for non-work related activities. I see cyberloafing happen so often because of how easy it is to access the internet and social media. It is so easy to browse the web, online shop, watch videos, etc. instead of staying on work-related tasks. Cyber technology creates opportunities for workplace deviance by making it easier for employees to engage in and hide misconduct and harder for employers to monitor every action. Without proper oversight, there is more frequent occurrences of deviant behavior.
