Media Diet

I’m no stranger to sports consumption. Whether it’s through reading a substantial amount of notifications on my phone or watching television, consuming sports has basically been apart of my life since my early childhood days. My sports consumption nowadays is tied to notifications on Instagram and X. Instagram and X are the two social media apps that I feel comfortable using and I find are the quickest with their up to date software. My preferred sports that I like to follow are the NFL, NBA, MLB and CFB. My present “diet” is unhealthy. I think my diet is unhealthy in large part because I feel the pressure to manage and run the professional NFL sports page on Instagram, that I’m the owner of. It’s important that I have many notifications turned on so that I don’t miss anything important to share with my followers. Over the years, my diet has changed from healthy to unhealthy. My diet was healthy 5 years ago, my sports intake was organized and catered in a way that I wouldn’t receive as many, if not a zero percentage of notifications. There would be times where I’d have much more free time to do non consumption related activities like working out or going for a bike ride. However, ever since these apps algorithms changed along with sports related information expanding every year, I’ve been lead into an unhealthy diet where it has become very addicting. For example, I relate my addiction to coffee. Once find and taste your favorite style, it’s hard to stop. The coffee creamer is the notifications. I have a great idea and feel for what coffee flavors taste good and I know how much to add to my cup, however when I go to the store and see a brand new flavor that catches my eye, I’m curious to try that new flavor because I wan’t to know if it lives up to my expectations of being good or not. If I could predict what changes would happen in my sports diet in the next five years, it would be that my diet would probably stay the same if not become worse due to how much notification traffic I receive about sports on a daily basis. If I had the magic wand with the power to change one thing in the sports landscape, it would be for there to be a limit to how many notifications a person can receive a day. I understand that I have the access to mute notifications, but I’ve found that sometimes doing that isn’t enough to fully change my addiction habits.
