As a young college student that grew up during a time before smartphones where fully
mainstream, I see how technology ties into each level of Maslow’s Hierarchy. For physiological
needs, my phone and laptop are essential for things like food ordering apps or things like the
heating system in our house that keeps me warm. For safety, I, use apps for banking, two-factor
authentication, and let my friends and family keep tracking my location in real time to stay
secure. Love and belonging can come through social media, where I stay connected with friends
and family, especially when we’re apart. Esteem is boosted by online achievements, whether
through getting recognition on LinkedIn or acing a digital assignment on canvas. Finally, self-
actualization is supported by online learning platforms like Masterclass, where I explore
personal interests beyond my courses. Technology helps me fulfill these needs daily, in
different ways.
