Purpose of the Assignment
The purpose of this assignment is to reflect on my nursing practice and discuss my attainment of the ten AACN competencies, including Knowledge for Nursing Practice; Person-Centered Care; Population Health; Scholarship for the Nursing Discipline; Quality and Safety; Interprofessional Partnerships; Systems-Based Practice; Informatics and Healthcare Technologies; Professionalism; Personal, Professional, and Leadership Development.
Reason for Inclusion of the Assignment in the Portfolio
The portfolio provides an overview of the assignments, accomplishments, and growths of my time in the BSN program. This reflection directly addresses those things and discusses the ways I applied my knowledge to clinical practice.
An Overview of the Application of the 10 AACN Competencies
- Knowledge for Nursing Practice: integration of a nursing model into clinical practice in the completion of my Theory Paper in NURS 306.
- Person-Centered Care: I practiced person-centered care at the Orange Free Clinic by respecting each patient’s preferences and wishes, as well as treating them with a holistic outlook.
- Population Health: In NURS 402, I researched health issues in my community and found hypertension to be a significant one, so I conducted a teaching project on it.
- Scholarship for the Nursing Discipline: I analyzed nursing literature and created a literature review table in NURS 306, so that I could have evidence-based practice to guide nursing interventions.
- Quality and Safety: I created a post to the quality and safety education for nurses discussion board in NURS 490W. This helped me to identify and analyze issues, and determine the best interventions.
- Interprofessional Partnerships: At the Orange Free Clinic, I was involved in partnerships between providers, pharmacy, social workers, nurses, and receptionists. I saw how important effective collaboration is to quality patient care.
- Systems-Based Practice: In 490W, I wrote the Business Cost Analysis Paper on how economic and operations affect the way we deliver healthcare.
- Informatics and Healthcare Technologies: In NURS 417, I evaluated two healthcare websites using the PEMAT tool, when wrote a paper analyzing my results.
- Professionalism: In NURS 401, I reflected on what I thought made a professional nurse and created a document where I discuss my thoughts.
- Personal, Professional, and Leadership Development: In NURS 401, I wrote a paper discussing my educational and professional goals in my journey as a BSN-competent nurse.
