Entry Four

Compare cybersecurity risks in the U.S. and another country.

When comparing the United States to other countries, it may come as a shock to some how the United States is not the most well-equipped country against cyber threats. A study of over 60 countries found that the most cyber-secure country is Japan.

When looking at the graph above provided by comparitech.com, it’s also more apparent how the United States compares to Japan and other countries in regards to safety against cyber threats. While America is far from instable and insecure against cyber threats, it still lacks in proper security and protection compares to other countries. Even when pitted against it’s neighboring countries of Mexico and Canada, it still lacks in security. However, when comparing the United States to other countries such as China and Algeria, the United States is the much safer option.

With all of this information in mind, we can compared the United States security to risks to other countries. For this discussion, I will primarily be comparing cyber risks between the United States and Japan.

  • Mobiles Infected with Malware: 2.89% of mobile users in the United States compared to the 2.70% of Japanese mobile users. While the change in percentage isn’t drastic, it still shows there is less of a mobile malware threat.
  • Number of Computers Affected by Phishing: 11.82% of users in the United States compared to the 8.93% of Japanese computer users. This is a more obvious percentage difference which shows the risks in the two differing countries. The reason for this difference could easily be due to human error or the number of persons targeting via phishing. Nonetheless, phishing is a more prominent risk for the United States.
  • Number of Users Attacked by Mobile Banking Trojans: 0.02% of uses in the United States compared to the 1.89% of Japanese users. This comparison shows that not all locations are idea and Japan suffers it flaws. When it comes to mobile banking trojans, Japan is more affected than the United States. This comparison is in place to show that all locations suffer from their difficulties.
  • Total Number of Covid 19 Related Malicious File Detections: 2,059,858 in the United States compared to the 7,931 in Japan. This is a recent cyber risk that came about due to the pandemic. While America faces with 76.4 million Covid cases, Japan has only dealt with 3.22 million cases (google.com). The reason I add this statistic is because it shows that situation heavily affects cyber risks. There is a great difference in number because America has been faced with more cases, meaning there is a greater risk for this information to be affected.

These three comparisons show a minor and major difference in cyber threats, alongside the possibility of a cyberthreat changing due to situation. Comparing two countries is difficult because the situations of those countries differs. It’s unfair to compared because of those differences, making it hard to truly determine which is worse or better. However, with that in mind, the United States is greatly affected by attacks from phishing, malware, ransomware, and other risks because of its economic situation and number of citizens.
