Cyber technology has created opportunities for workplace deviance in many ways. It allows employees to use devices and perform their tasks remotely whether they are storing or accessing information from one place to another or issuing commands remotely. Cyber technology allows employees to perform their tasks at places other than the company office, so it would provide those who would want to do harm more opportunities for workplace deviance. Especially, if the employee is working at home where they are probably not being supervised, so they may not be held accountable for any intentional harmful actions they may commit in their home. This could encourage those employees to perform malicious activities to commit workplace deviance where they might not have done so if they were working in the company’s office. An example of employees working remotely is now, during the coronavirus. Many employees are working from home to encourage social distancing and limiting contact with customers and other employees. Because of this, employees would have access to sensitive information remotely such as their home. Employees whose goal is to do harm to the company and damage their reputation could do so by exposing sensitive information of its employees or customers to the public and they would have ample opportunity to do so. Some of the reasons for sabotaging a company could be the employee is a spy, wants vengeance exacted against the company because they believe they were wronged, or doing it for their own benefit. The motivations for workplace deviance could be the money that another company could offer for the employee that is the spy to get them to sabotage their rival company to monopolize their services. Another reason could be an employee was dismissed from that company, but still has access to sensitive information from when they were still employed in the company. Other reasons would be an employee is performing workplace deviance simply for their own benefit and interests and does not care about the company. These are ways cyber technology has created opportunities for workplace deviance.
