I created this item because when we went over intron removal in Introductory Biology, I didn’t understand much about the process. I liked learning more about how the intron has different conserved sites and the process of connecting to the branch point and making the lariat. I can’t imagine the man who taught me how to train horses (and use a lariat) ever talking about mRNA splicing. Likewise, I couldn’t imagine scientists ever using horse-related terminology to describe a biochemical process. Ken Bain talks about the benefits of having multiple interests and being constantly curious, and how that can help you solve problems by associating “unrelated” ideas. I think this is a good example of that, even if it is a surface level connection. Either that, or the researchers who studied the splicing process just finished a Lonesome Dove marathon.
