The invention of revolutionary technology like computers and smartphones has drastically changed the world and the way we live our lives on a daily basis. The standard of living has only improved more and more since the addition of this new technology. One of the major ways computers have improved our lives is by making the world a safer place. A great example of technology’s ability to make the world a safer place would be surveillance and security. In the technological age, criminals have had an increasingly harder time committing and getting away with their crimes. This is due to computers being utilized to surveil society at a much more efficient pace than humans would. Every single store, restaurant, and hotel you could think of has cameras and other surveillance technology around every corner. This surveillance technology is used to monitor an area and catch any crimes or suspicious behavior by criminals. Technology like this makes the world a safer place by holding criminals accountable and also discouraging them from committing crimes in the first place. Computers also make communication faster and more efficient than ever before. Speedy communication makes the world a better place by making it substantially easier to contact help when put in dangerous, criminal scenarios.
With all this being said, technology and computers specifically can also make society unsafe in a number of different ways. Computers have opened up a gateway for new and previously unheard of crimes to take place. Cyber crimes like hacking, phishing, and identity fraud have exploded since the development of new high tech technology. This new market of crime has been taken advantage of by hundreds of thousands of criminals worldwide. Hacking can be utilized to damage private and public technology for financial or personal gain. Phishing can be used to steal citizens private passcodes and information. Identity fraud can be utilized to take citizens personal information like social security numbers, home addresses, and financial information. All three of these examples make the world much more dangerous for the average citizen all thanks to computers and new technology. Although computers have raised the standard of living and have contributed to the world in many positive ways; cyber crime and other new threats have been introduced to the world due to this same technology.
