My first day at General Electric was pretty boring. We started off the day with a three-hour long onboarding meeting. This was to help us set up our computers. Afterwards, we got to meet our assignment leaders. My assignment leader’s name is Robert Wimmer or “Rob”. Rob is German and he currently lives in Switzerland with his wife and kids, and he works for GE Switzerland. After we made our introductions, Rob explained what our project is and what my responsibilities would be. I work in the 3rd party security and Identity and Access Management department. Our main project was to create a new toolkit that housed all of our 3rd party data. However, the data that we wanted housed was separated into four different teams and one of my responsibilities was to collect the data from these teams and make a clean and organized report. This is where I started to use Excel a lot more than I ever have. For the entire week, I spent learning Excel formulas and mapping and cleaning data from different data sources. Another responsibility of mine was to learn a new scripting language. I have foundational knowledge in some programming languages (C++ and C#), but I never have used a scripting language. Rob had me learn the basics of SQLite so we could instead use scripting to automate our 3rd party security reports instead of using Excel and manually mapping the data. Thankfully, GE offers LinkedIn learning (which is basically just free classes you can take online) so I was able to learn as much as I could for the week about SQLite. Finally, the last thing I did for the week was reviewing GE’s security policies and procedures for internal employees, external contractors, and cyber crime response. Overall, I thought my first week was kind of boring but it’s just the basics.
