Welcome Fellow Readers, I will be answering ePortfolio Entry #11. The question is, what is the overlap between criminal justice and cybercrime? How does this overlap relate to the other disciplines discussed in this class? For those who do not know, what is cybercrime and what is criminal justice?

Criminal Justice is “the structure of laws, rules and agencies designed to hold criminals accountable for their misdeeds and help them to restore their victims as much as possible.” Criminal Justice has three areas such as Law Enforcement, The Court Room, and lastly Corrections. First, Law Enforcement are people trained to enforce and apprehend people who break the law. Second, The Court Room defend those who need to be defended for their innocence and put those away who you cannot comply to the law. Lastly, Corrections are people who deal with where they are placed and placing the punishment upon the law breakers.

Now, cybercrime obviously sounds like anything crime related when someone is doing something is doing something Illegal online with a computer or any time of device that violated laws. “While most cybercrimes are carried out in order to generate profit for the cybercriminals, some cybercrimes are carried out against computers or devices directly to damage or disable them. Others use computers or networks to spread malware, illegal information, images or other materials. Some cybercrimes do both — i.e., target computers to infect them with a computer virus, which is then spread to other machines and, sometimes, entire networks.”

Now, technology in this case is very important when it comes to crimes online. If you were to commit a cybercrime you would be held accountable in the court of law which is the criminal justice system. An overlap can be discussed could be criminologists. Criminologists look at cybercrimes as white collar crimes.
