Cybersecurity is relatively new to me, but it still intrigues me because I have friends that are cybersecurity majors. Not only cybersecurity but also computer science majors, and they fascinate me. I would not like to be a cybersecurity major, but I am going to have it as a minor to go along with my criminal justice major. In today’s world, cybersecurity and cybercrime is a growing issue in today’s society. Learning about it and finding ways to help our society is essential. It is scary to many people, myself included, that with a link clicked, someone can have all your information from the device that the connection was accessed. Not only does this affect people, but it also affects large companies, hospitals, and schools. I remember that somewhere last year, ODU was hacked, and some information was leaked, if I remember correctly. Now let’s think if that happens to the US government or to a hospital. If someone gets to hack into a hospital security system and shuts down the hospital, patients will suffer the consequences. I remember there was an episode on Grey’s Anatomy where someone hacked into the hospital system and turned off all the power, and people in Intensive Care, whether grown-ups or infants, had to be transferred quickly because of the machines that they were hooked up to. Yes, this is a fake scenario, but it can be accurate, and it has been. The Lake Charles Memorial Hospital was hacked into in 2022, and nearly 300,000 patient information was lost. That could be dangerous because we rely on electronic records now. With that being said, I want to find a way to prevent things like this from happening and new forms of cybercrime from developing. I believe online drug deals will increase, where people will buy and sell drugs online and find ways to deliver them without being detected. This is why I want to learn about cybersecurity, use the information given to me, and help others.
