Can you spot three fake websites and compare the three fake websites to three real websites, plus showcase what makes the fake websites fake?
Note: Don’t access/generate or click on any unwanted/fake websites on your web browsers. Showcase with examples, what makes the fake websites fake.
Fake Sites:
1. http: //www.dhmo.org/
Web address is missing the “s” in http. Web site is a spoof site about Dihydrogen Monoxide, which is simply water. While site appears semiprofessional, it is certainly dated and clearly a fun site made to show a fake site.
2. https: //autorenterstore.com/ga/click/2-38639086-266-15491-30297-57850-c1c62525a5-2iabcbcb5f
While the URL starts with “HTTPS” the text after the .com is overly complicated for the home page. After doing a quick search on google, the website was not found at top of list which I find odd. URL was from email found in my spam folder, which tells me it was flagged from the beginning.
3. http: //www.wemarket4u.net/fatfoe/
Website URL is missing the “s” in http. While site name could be considered “catchy” the lack of proper spelling and grammar make this site suspicious. Site has multiple factors that seem “fishy” and untrustworthy, such as a personality quiz on the right and what appears to be a fact testimony on the left side.
Real sites:
4. https: //www.google.com
Has “https” in URL. Well know and “trusted” site.
5. https: //www.yahoo.com/
Has “https” in URL. One of the top free email platforms. Well know and recognized as a secure site.
6. https: //www.odu.edu/
Has “https” in URL. Web site of school I am currently attending. Simple and easy to read URL.
URLs were altered to avoid links. Added space behind HTTP part of URL.
