Cybersecurity is an ever-growing field in both secure developments and security risks. Many different kinds of attacks happen everywhere, with phishing attacks being the most frequent. These attacks are widespread and happen to almost everyone. All it takes is signing up for one sketchy site and now your inbox is full of emails promising you things or asking for information. America specifically has a lot of issues with phishing and spam emails, phone calls, and texts. Most of these attacks originate from within the country. Because cybersecurity seems so complicated many people do not properly arm themselves for browsing the internet and that is a big reason why these scams continue to be used by hackers because they work. Other countries have similar issues but also have specific cybercrime that may be more prolific in those countries such as China which has tried to combat cybercrime with new legislation. Despite China’s best efforts, the cybercrime rate has grown since 2017 and it seems that many of the hackers are very young.

One scam that is very popular in south Korea is betting scams. A company will make a website that lets you bet money on games like choosing even or odd, soccer games, and other things. This scam is effective because it draws people in and is controlled by the website holders, this allows them to decide who wins and who loses so they always come out on top. They use very simple servers and fake online money so it is very easy to abort these scam sites if anything goes wrong such as a player winning a large sum of money. They will use the money players sunk into the site to make a new one and start again. Because these sites are hidden and illegal they are very easy to get rid of and players can not go to the police about losing money because they would have to admit to gambling. These scams usually target younger audiences and are prevalent enough for Korean modern media and entertainment to make plot points in certain shows and comics. (I learned about this from Korean comics I have read and small amounts of research so I know it is an issue however I cannot confirm the complete validity of my statements)

America does not have the same level of issue, while there is no doubt illegal online betting it is not an issue so large that it is consistently covered by the media. However, marketing and fake websites are an issue that affects many children such as websites where you input your email and receive free in-game currency but in reality, your email is used for malicious purposes.
