Yet, the thing standing in the way of someone implementing one. That one problem being the cost. But first, the benefits.

The benefits of having a security system implemented are, for one, safety. Being that small businesses are an important part of our nation’s economic infrastructure, they also need to be protected from a cyber threat. They need the confidentiality so that their information isn’t taken or stolen by someone on a computer. They need system integrity, so that their information isn’t modified in any way. Which is why a business would consider implementing a security framework. One risk of a small business getting attacked is that a customers information becomes compromised. And if a small business integrates a strong information security program, it can help gain and retain customer’s, employee’s, and business partners information from theft. The best way to ensure trust in your customers is to ensure them that their information will be safe no matter what.

The cost of a security framework is… steep. If a small business does get attacked and is a victim of a cyber crime, the cost of recovering from one can, on average, cost $20,752. And that cost is based on per attack. If a business banking account got hacked, the losses can cost $19,948. This was a different story back in 2013, where everything costed less money. Recovering was at $8,699 and for banking it was at $6,927.

The critical components of a security policy should be under these areas. First, the policies should be enforceable, but while also remaining flexible. Make the policies easy to understand for someone that could be new. Minimize the consequences so that in the case someone messes up, they won’t have such harsh consequences for messing up the first time, scale them up by the amount of times it happens.

Security terminology are as follows.

Cloud- Technology that allows us to access files and services through the internet. A collection of computers with large storage.

Software- A set of programs that tell a computer to perform a task. These instructions are compiled into a package that users can install and use.

Domain- A group of computers, printers and devices that are interconnected and governed as a whole

Malware- An umbrella term that describes all forms of malicious software designed to wreak havoc on a computer.

Virus- A type of malware aimed to corrupt, erase or modify information on a computer before spreading to others

Ransomware- A form of malware that deliberately prevents you from accessing files on your computer – holding your data hostage. It will typically encrypt files and request that a ransom be paid in order to have them decrypted or recovered.

These are just a few of those terms, but these are apart of the terminology of security.

So in the new age of technology, we have to find new ways of protecting our devices and servers. And with hackers trying to exploit everything through viruses and other kinds of malware, we have to, in a way, “even the odds”. By upgrading a security framework or, if on a budget, using the best anti-virus software money can buy. Utilizing a personal firewall can also do the trick to prevent any unwanted packets coming into your systems.

Implementing a security system to protect business data and also customer data is integral to bolstering your businesses trust and security.
