How does this overlap relate to the other disciplines discussed in this class?

Cybercrime is diverse definition that can cover a number of topics. But as a whole, cybercrime can be identified as cyber-related behavior that goes against our governing or societal laws. Whether it be fraud, hacking, money laundering- the cyber space is not exempt from right and wrong.

Criminology is the study of crime and deviant behavior, typically in the physical world. However, in recent years, cybercrime has begun to introduce itself into the world of criminology. Criminologist are beginning to identify and explore causes of cyber offendings and victimizations. However, with how prominent technology may be, cybercrime makes up roughly 20% of classes within a criminology degree. The field is often untouched due to little being known about the laws which govern it as well disinterest in the cyber space.

Nonetheless, there are still overlaps between the two disciplines. And often, these overlaps are found in past discoveries.

Criminologists uncovered how offenders and victims often have low self control.

Neutralization Theory which states that offenders often justify their wrongdoings.

Learning Theory which states people learn from those around them.

Routine Activity Theory which identifies a perfect opportunity for crime to occur.

Subculture Theory which states certain people and subcultures are conductive to crime.

These preexisting theories are used within the physical world, but can also be found in the cyberspace. For instance, Routine Activities Theory: a likely offender (hacker) comes across a suitable target (information on a laptop) that is unguarded (lack of firewalls).

Additionally, knowledge gained while studying criminology allows for easy integration in studying the cyberspace. These skills and ideas can be put into practice in the cyberspace. Though cybercrime isn’t seen as traditional crime, it still very much involves human behavior- which is what criminologists aim to understand. Behind every hacker is a face, and the knowledge taken from criminology can be used in the exact same fashion as physical crime.

Disciplines such as digital forensics, information science, sociology, and victimology are only a few examples of disciplines which overlap in the world of criminology and cybercrime. These disciplines build the foundation for creating a safe and secure cyberspace. They also work to understand how to improve and further prevent cyber attacks as well as physical ones.

To sum it up, the main overlaps between criminology and cybercrime are:

The desire to achieve the same goal of creating a safe environment while prevent future crime.

The offenders and study of human behavior.

The systems used to identity and persecute crime.

What is the overlap between criminal justice and cybercrime?
