Entry Nine

Describe three ways that computers have made the world safer and less safe.

The world of computers and technology is forever expanding. It has opened a doorway for endless possibilities outside of normal human perception. Humans are able to continue expanding their knowledge and growing their world, giving way for a bright future. But with these endless possibilities also paves way for a dangerous and unsafe world.

The two ideas unfortunately work hand in hand. We will never have a safe world, nor will we have a completely dangerous one either. The more technology grows, the more advanced we become and the more opportunities grow for nefarious acts.

  • Advanced Communication: Thanks to the introduction of computers and technology, it has grown increasingly easier for people to communicate across the globe. Whether it be through email, online chatrooms, video chatting, text messages, or social media platforms, anyone anywhere can communicate without delay. This advanced communication has allowed for our technology to expand beyond paper mail, offering services such as:
Security Systems: thanks to technology and advanced communication, it’s much easier for individuals to get the help they need when they need it- whether it be for emergency aid or security. Technology has even made it possible to communicate without words, using signals and tones.
Transportation: communication is available across all directions of the earth, making traveling in planes and on ships safer, secure, and… well, possible!
  • Influence on Utility Facilities: Technology and computers have had a huge influence on utility facilities around the globe. Thanks to technology, we are able to use transportation, live in homes, work, and drink and eat safely without much thought. While it seems irrelevant at first glance, we owe our normal day to day routines to the technology that has been created. I am able to write this and take this class because of technology. Our food is tested, our water is cleaned, our transportation is reliable and safe, our homes and cities are built on the basis of technology and computers.
  • More Criminal Opportunities: However, with a safer world comes the possibility of crime. While technology and computers as a whole have made life safer and easier, it has opened a gateway for criminal activity that often goes unnoticed and untracked. Anyone with a computer can commit a form of crime if they will it so. Because of that, computers often make our world an unsafe place:
Unnoticed and Untracked: Because there are no security cameras or guards, cybercrime can go unnoticed if there’s nothing actively searching for attacks. Additionally, cyber footprints can be erased and those committing crime may never get caught. This makes cybercrime so dangerous.
White-Collar Crime: People in power can now commit white-collar crime without getting caught, this includes embezzlement and fraud.
Hacking: Generally, anyone can hack into a system and steal information. This information gets compromised from names, addresses, bank information, and more. People’s identities are now easily stolen because of this along with money, assets, and important information.
