However, the technical side is only one aspect
of the job. Social science research and principles are also critical for cybersecurity
analysts, particularly when dealing with concerns about privacy, marginalized groups,
and ethical technology design. A knowledge of social science also enables analysts to
better understand human behavior, societal inequalities, and ethical responsibilities,
essentially allowing them to undertake their work in more effective and inclusive ways.

The Importance of Social Science Principles in the Cybersecurity Analyst Role

Cybersecurity analysts rely on social science principles like relativism, ethical
neutrality, skepticism, and empiricism. For example, analysts need to be aware that the
needs of some groups are different from others: according to relativism, not all users
experience technology the same way. Analysts employ ethical neutrality in their
investigations, focusing on their jobs without jumping to conclusions about the behavior
of users. In addition, skepticism is important. Analysts need to interrogate the
assumptions that underpin users’ behavior, the capabilities of security tools, and even
the lateral inclusivity of security policies. Some of the most evidence-based routines in
daily operations are incident analysis, threat intelligence, and risk assessments.
Cybersecurity analysts use data from the real world in ways similar to how social
scientists look at research findings and make decisions based on them instead of relying on their intuition.

Marginalized Groups and Privacy

Cybersecurity analysts’ work has direct implications for marginalized
groups, who regularly face disproportionate risks online (Sannon and Forte, 2022).
describe in their article that marginalized users, including racial minorities and low-
income communities, are more affected by privacy violations and surveillance.
Cybersecurity analysts must, therefore, create security protocols and incident response
strategies that consider all these vulnerabilities (Privacy International, n.d.).

By utilizing frameworks such as Privacy Responses and Costs, analysts can
explain the importance of inclusive security practices and make sure protective
measures do not inadvertently harm marginalized users. For example, surveillance tools
that record “suspicious behavior” must be critically evaluated to prevent reinforcing
biases that target members of minority groups disproportionately. Understanding
intersectionality, how race, gender, class, and other identities intersect, helps analysts to
make sure policies are fair.

Applying Social Science in Day-to-Day Cybersecurity Work.

Cybersecurity analysts apply social science in their daily work by
communicating with diverse stakeholders, educating users on safe online behavior, and
ensuring compliance with privacy laws such as GDPR and CCPA. Their role requires
strong interpersonal skills, cultural sensitivity, and ethical judgment, all of which are
grounded in an education in the social sciences. For example, when developing security
awareness programs, cybersecurity analysts need to consider the digital divide. Some
marginalized groups have limited access to high-quality cybersecurity education or
distrust institutions due to past discrimination. Outreach programs need to be culturally
sensitive, accessible, and focused on empowerment rather than fear (Cybersecurity &
Infrastructure Security Agency [CISA], n.d.). Cybersecurity analysts contribute to ethical
technology design. They engage in cross-disciplinary teamwork with developers and
designers to safeguard rather than undermine user privacy in new technologies. They
push for features like opt-in data sharing, clear data practices, and safeguards against
surveillance, particularly for vulnerable users. Electronic Frontier Foundation [EFF], n.d.)

Conclusion

Cybersecurity analysts need more than technical skills. They draw deeply from
social science principles to defend against malice and keep good people safe in a
complicated, often unequal digital world. Using relativism, skepticism, ethical neutrality,
and empiricism, analysts can develop more ethical and inclusive security theories. Their
work directly affects marginalized groups, intensifying the need for socially aware
cybersecurity practices. With the ongoing proliferation of the digital world, the
cybersecurity analyst as a protector of privacy, dignity, and equity will become ever
more critical.

Cited Works:

– Sannon, S., & Forte, A.
