The tech field is ever-changing, and it
is important to be adaptable my solution to that is by growing in all aspects
and not forming a particular focus on any one thing because I do not want to
turn a blind eye to anything due to the fact I was focusing on one topic or career
for too long. In particular, the social and behavioral sciences because they encapsulate how humans decide to do something and what causes people to do what they may do. It is essential to know how people think, act, and work when working in cybersecurity to prevent problems before they even arise in the first place. Without knowledge of how people go about things, there would be no ability to stop hackers in the first place. When someone working in cybersecurity does not know the possibilities of someone’s actions or even their intent with their actions there is no way to solve a problem that they don’t see or understand.

Week 3 Journal Entry:

Visit PrivacyRights.org to see the types of publicly available information about data breaches. How might researchers use this information to study breaches?

A researcher would use information like what is found on privacyrights.org because it shows off everything tech and security-related. There is so much information on the website that shows data breach reports and shows how to mitigate and defend yourself from other things for example spam. On privacyrights.org there is so much information that can be put to use to protect your system better and to keep you up to date with what is going on. Right now on the resources page, there are things like the California Delete Act, ways to reduce spam, and data breach notification in the US 2022 report so you can learn all types of information that could be directly or indirectly aligned with studying breaches.

Week 4 Journal Entry:

Give specific examples of how your digital experiences relate to each level of need.

There are many different ways that my digital experiences can relate to these levels of need. Going from the bottom to the top starting with Biological & Physiological needs in a digital sense I find a lot of good information on how to live a healthy lifestyle that is sustainable from creators on the internet. Then safety wise we use a ring camera on our front and back door to know what goes in and out. Love/belonging is an easy one considering tech is how I communicate with my family from all over. The first way that I could think of is the URL structure and the domain name. If the website is fame there could be a slight misspelling of the domain name, unusual extensions, or numbers and or hyphens in the URL. For example “http://www.faceb00k-security.com/” would be fake and “http://www.facebook.com/” is the real version. The second way is a fake website may lack SSL encryption so it may start with HTTP instead of HTTPS. For example “http://online-banking-support.com/” would be fake while “https://www.bankofamerica.com/” would be a real secured connection. Website design quality can be a dead giveaway as well for example “http://www.bestbuy-support.shop/” will show bad image quality and inconsistent font while the real website “http://www.bestbuy.com/” is designed well.

Week 7 Journal Entry:

Explain how your memes relate to Human-centered cybersecurity.

I chose to go more abstract and make a meme and then say how the image itself can relate to human-centered cybersecurity. Image two, which I chose, shows how people make the gap between people and technology dwindle day by day and how people are getting more and more “into” technology as a whole. My last and final image three shows how businesses build off of technology as well, which causes technology to evolve and more collaboration tools to be invented.

Week 8 Journal Entry:

After watching the video, write a journal entry about how you think the media influences our understanding about cybersecurity

I believe the media influences our understanding of cybersecurity by setting a negative narrative around cybersecurity and hackers as a whole it seems to make people assume that all people in relation to hacking in general. When people think of hacking they will never think of ethical hackers due to how hackers are portrayed online and in movies and shows. Typically the hacker is the villain character or is using hacking as a means to destroy and not create or oppose evil so you think of instances like anonymous people who lurk in shadows or dark areas and use tech as a weapon instead of using it for good.

Week 9 Journal Entry:

How did you score? What do you think about the items in the scale? Why do you think that different patterns are found across the world?

I scored a three out of nine. The questions seemed so superficial to me it seemed like they were trying too hard to make some people feel bad about their media usage. It makes heavy media usage seem like an addiction to the degree of drugs or alcohol which really opens my eyes to how phones and technology can really take over people’s lives nowadays. I think that the patterns may vary around the world for many reasons for example a big reason is that third-world countries may have less access to technology which in turn would decrease the impact that tech has on their day-to-day lives.

Week 10 Journal Entry 10:

Read this and write a journal entry summarizing your response to the article on social cybersecurity.

The article “Social Cybersecurity” from Military Review discusses the growing importance of countering cyber threats that target social structures and influence operations. This concept, “social cybersecurity,” encompasses a proactive approach to defending against digital tactics that exploit human trust and societal divisions, like misinformation, manipulation, and coordinated inauthentic behavior. The article underscores the need for military and civilian institutions to strengthen their capabilities in recognizing, analyzing, and counteracting these threats to safeguard societal cohesion and public trust. With all that being said it is important to note social engineering which is talked about above can be prevented in many different measures but being fully aware of ways social engineering is used is the first step to solving the upcoming problem.

Week 10 Journal Entry 11:

As you watch the video
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iYtmuHbhmS0Links. Two economic theories applicable here are information asymmetry where the company was aware of the breach months before notifying customers, creating an imbalance of information, and cost-benefit analysis, as both the company and consumers weigh the costs of security measures and breach impacts. Social sciences theories such as trust theory (consumer trust erosion post-breach) and social responsibility theory (the company’s duty to inform and protect users) are also relevant. Digital forensics experts work with evidence that gives clues about why criminals do what they do, which connects to subjects like psychology and criminology.
