Write UP: Guest Speaker 

BLUF: Today in class Commander Terrance Green came in and talked to us about his field of work and also how it relates to cyber security.

His main message

Mr Green’s main message to the entire class was the concept of always having a growing mind and not giving up. He really emphasizes on the fact that we need to put ourselves out there, he’s currently studying to become a cyber analyst to help him advance in his career. He encouraged us to do the same, whether it be obtaining certifications, or looking for more work experience, he told us to always be ready to learn and work hard.

Examples he gave on the field

One example he gives on the field is his constant use of cyber security usage. Although his main job is a meteorologist as an executive officer, he constantly works with people in IT, when on the ship, he works with them to gather information on current and future weather patterns, making sure that the navy crew are properly prepared for any terrible weather coming their way.

The importance of data

One last thing he reiterated is the importance of data. He mentioned that the one thing that really connects his job along with many jobs and the field of cyber security is the collection of data and turning it into actionable data, which can be used for real life problems.

Conclusion: Commander Terrence Green was a cool speaker and I’m happy that he appeared in our class. He reminded me how important it is to push myself to keep learning and apply my knowledge in the field. He gave me insight on his experience and how to potentially get to where he is at life
