There are many ethical issues that can arise when storing electronic information about individuals. This issue is only increasing as the world becomes even more technologically advanced. Four relevant issues that I will be discussing are privacy, data breaches, data accuracy, and data ownership. First, let’s discuss the issue of privacy, possibly the most important ethical issue of them all. It is fairly obvious why this would be an issue when it comes to storing information. Every human has a right to privacy and a right to control their personal information. When storing electronic information about individuals, it is imperative to ensure that this information is kept secure and that it is only accessed by authorized personnel. The second ethical issue involves data breaches. Data breaches occur anytime that sensitive, confidential, or stolen information is transmitted, viewed, or stolen. If electronic information about individuals is not stored securely, it can be vulnerable to data breaches. This can result in sensitive information being exposed or stolen, which in turn, can have serious consequences for the individuals that are affected. The third ethical issue is data accuracy. Electronic information about individuals should be accurate and up to date. If this information is inaccurate or out of date, it can have negative consequences for the individuals affected, such as being denied access to services or being unfairly targeted by marketing campaigns. The last ethical issue that arises when storing electronic information about individuals is data ownership. Electronic information about individuals can be valuable. This has resulted in many questions concerning ownership of the data. For example, if a social media company collects data about its users, who truly owns this data? The scary thing is that it could be the company, the users, or both. This can create issues surrounding how this data is used and shared, as well as the rights and privacy of the individuals to control their personal information.
