It is obvious why cybersecurity is essential in today’s society. It protects our sensitive information from theft, damage, and unauthorized access. While it may seem less important to others who are not majoring in cybersecurity, it is actually extremely significant in many other areas. The four majors I chose were communications (my own major), Criminology, Computer and Information sciences, and Political Science and Government. First, there are several ways in which Communications is related to cybersecurity. A communications major may use cybersecurity knowledge to help protect sensitive or private information such as personal data. For instance, a Communications professional working for a company might use certain cybersecurity practices to help protect the company’s intellectual property or even prevent data breaches. Next, cybersecurity is very important when it comes to criminology. A criminology major may use cybersecurity knowledge to help investigate cybercrime or other crimes that involve the use of technology. An example of this would be a criminologist using forensic tools to analyze digital evidence, or even working with law enforcement agencies to identify and track cybercriminals. Thirdly, there are many ways in which a computer and information sciences major might use cybersecurity. They may use it to help develop and implement secure software and systems. An example of this would be a computer scientist designing and building secure networks, creating encryption algorithms, or even developing secure software applications. In addition to this, a computer and information sciences major might work in information assurance, which helps ensure that sensitive data is protected from unauthorized access or theft. This could involve developing security protocols and monitoring network traffic for signs of intrusion. Finally, let’s explore how cybersecurity and Political Science and Government are connected. A political science and government major may use cybersecurity knowledge to help shape policy related to cybersecurity and/or national security. An example of this would be a political scientist working for a government agency by providing analysis and recommendations that are related to policy and legislation in cybersecurity.
