The overlap between criminal justice and cybercrime is inevitable. In today’s society with how advanced technology has become it has made it possible for many things to occur without being in the same room or even country. Cybercrime is just like any other crime just committed through means like computers or the internet and criminal justice assesses crimes and holds people accountable. Cybercrime is just as punishable as any other crime and it has its own criteria and can be sentenced to jail time as well. Things like fraud, stealing identities, and even violating privacy are all some representations of cybercrime to some degree. I have personally encountered an event where my billing information was stolen. I came to the conclusion that it was stolen at a gas station when I paid for my pump when that was really my only recent purchase that week on my credit card. I was fortunate enough to have my bank, Navy Federal, notice and freeze my account fast enough so the damage that took place was almost like nothing happened at all. With all the advancements in technology and different ways that people can take advantage of technology criminal justice and cybercrime are going to cross paths a lot more moving forward. On how this topic overlap relates to other disciplines discussed in class we can take into consideration the article from INPRESS at International Journal of Criminal Justice Sciences titled Cybersecurity and Criminal Justice Exploring the Intersections. It discusses the overlap between the two topics within the aspect of scholarships and studies and how criminal justice students may be adapting and taking in the cybercrime coursework. Every day technology advances we have to as well to keep up in every aspect even setting rules and laws to keep people safe and criminals accountable.
