This week’s lesson on infographics was the perfect continuation of that thought. Image-finding is the foundation, while putting them together in an informative and visually-pleasing way is the next level up. So on my journey upwards, I focused on creating an infographic this week while keeping in mind what I’ve learned about images, color, and composition.

YA Genre History Timeline, made with Canva

For this infographic, I drew on my lessons from the other course I’m taking this summer, Young Adult Literature. I wanted to try using a color palette extracted from an image in order to create a harmonious palette–in the future, I think I will try to find a brighter image. Though these colors are harmonious, they aren’t very exciting! The image at the bottom, small as it is, was the hardest part. I found it very difficult to find a book stack where I could crop out the background and still get enough books into the narrow, horizontal space without bleeding up beneath the text. It really is true that a thing done well looks effortless — good design looks far easier than it is! Anyone bent over their computer futzing for half an hour over a tiny image of a stack of books can attest.

I mentioned last week how vital visual additions are to any lesson, especially when working with students with reading impairments.
