What is the overlap between criminal justice and cybercrime? How does this overlap relate to the other disciplines discussed in this class?
Cybercrime is also known as electronic crime. This type of crime encompasses many different types of illegal actions, but all cybercrime uses a computer, network, or the internet to do illegal activities. This is why it is called cybercrime since the crimes are done using computers and network connections. Cyber crime is a crime committed using the means of technology and the internet. Although we talk about cybercrime as a separate entity to traditional crime, it is carried out by the same types of criminals for the same type of reasons. Criminologists discuss human factors in criminal justice and within cybercrime. Another overlap is the fact that those who receive an education through criminal justice programs in college may potentially have enough skill, knowledge, and training to take on some of the “softer” careers within cybersecurity. Cyber security is the application of technologies, processes and controls to protect systems, networks, programs, devices and data from cyber attacks. It aims to reduce the risk of cyber attacks and protect against the unauthorized exploitation of systems, networks and technologies. Criminal justice refers to the system by which justice is dispensed onto those who have committed a crime. It includes the crime a defendant allegedly committed, the law enforcement officers who arrested him, the court system that prosecutes and defends him, and how the defendant is punished if he is convicted. So these two ties together in the sense they are both a form of protection but one focuses on technology and the other is the society.
