The crisis I\u2019m going to be talking about today is the Tattoo gate scandal that happened at Ohio State a decade ago. This tattoo gate scandal was a major crisis that could\u2019ve been prevented if Jim Tressel had taken the immediate steps available to him at the time instead of just keeping quiet. With tattoo gate, Ohio State players were receiving discounts from a local tattoo shop along with some other improper benefits like receiving money from boosters. As you all know, student athletes are not allowed to accept anything free or of monetary value to them because it goes against ncaa guidelines. Accepting such things puts the athletes\u2019 eligibility at risk and may render them unable to play or ineligible. The main reason Tressel resigned was because of all the public and media pressure being put on Ohio State. It became overwhelming and it ultimately forced his hand. The President of the university tried his best not to fire Tressel because of all the success he had brought Ohio State. But, ultimately Tressel resigned because he had dug a hole too deep to climb back out of. Ohio State then named Luke Fickell head coach for the 2011 season and tried to rebrand the image of the university after the tattoo gate scandal. Honestly, from what I\u2019ve read Ohio State didn\u2019t really do too much rebranding when it came to the media. But then again, social media and the media weren\u2019t as advanced a decade ago as they are today. The main rebrand came from Ohio State hiring Urban Meyer and the success he brought to the school. Factor in the players that were involved with the scandal graduated, got drafted, or left the program, Ohio State regained its image. In my opinion, I think the media let this one play itself out so that the onfield success of Urban Meyer would help people forget all about tattoo gate. I feel it was effective and it only worked because Ohio State is a powerhouse of a school. If this were a smaller school, tattoo gate might\u2019ve cause irreparable damage.,<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
