In today’s world, there is always a new news story about some scary computer security problem. There are always digital threats, such as hackers, snoopers, viruses, phishing attacks, watering hole attacks, etc., lurking in the depths of cyberspace. That’s why you should be invested heavily into making sure your computer is secure and safe. Hopefully, there is some sort of security software on your computer already, (I personally use Norton360 which comes with a VPN as well as software security). Even if you took all these precautions to keep your technology and network safe, how do you know it worked? If you don’t ever test your security you won’t know it’s really safe or not until an attack happens. Many companies hire white hat hackers to constantly test their security. I understand that you’re not IBM or Microsoft so luckily you can test it for yourself for free.

First way you can test your security, if you have a computer using a Windows operating system, is by using the Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer. This is a security tool that analyzes your system for any vulnerabilities or threats.

Second, you can update your browser plugins. Keep your browser updated. Only having the latest version, which is usually the safest version, will help keep your computer or network from being susceptible to attacks.

Third, test your firewall. Your firewall is the barrier between you and any malicious content out there in the cyberspace. A firewall helps keep you invisible to hackers searching for their next victim and even if a hacker knows where your computer is, the firewall keeps them out.

Fourth, practice safe internet habits. Is your personal address on your Facebook? Is your phone number in your Instagram profile? Regardless of your answer, you still want to have your social media controlled only by you. Practice having good passwords and don’t click on any external links asking you to sign into your account.
