A well-known activist act in sports history that I am very familiar with is the Colin Kaepernick “kneel” protests during 2016. Throughout the 2016 NFL season, Colin Kaepernick would take a seat and later a knee during the national anthem in a symbolic attempt to voice his personal opinion on racial inequality and discrimination in the United States that was targeted at Black people. This activist act proved to be significant because many people in league NFL circles as well as the society group that loves NFL football at the time were familiar with who Colin Kaepernick was as an individual and where his beliefs resided when talking about discrimination and police brutality in the United States. Through using his own platform as an NFL player for the San Francisco 49ers, Kaepernick voiced his belief through peaceful protest messages alongside his consistent actions of kneeling. Kapernick alluded multiple times that the purpose of his action was to raise awareness toward the scarcity of attentiveness that racial inequality and police brutality problems happened to be receiving. Because this issue was considered controversial amongst many people, it sparked lots of lengthy discussions within all different mediums of NFL sports coverage. Public figures, media figures and fans felt as though Kapernick\u2019s kneeling actions were disrespectful to the United States and the flag, something that a lot of people died over. However, there were others that understood the unfair mistreatment the Black people were receiving and supported Kapernick all the way through.\u00a0 Most of these mediums focused on Kaepernick\u2019s viewpoint and reside with the points he uplifted in the issue he addressed. As more and more people began to understand where and ultimately why Kaepernick decided to kneel, it started a trend in other athletes joining the movement. Many of these athletes were teammates of Colin Kapernick on the San Francisco 49ers. Also, there were NFL players all around the league who supported the movement and began kneeling during the national anthem. The NFL did its best to suppress the issue, but had a hard time doing so because of the momentum the issue had gained overtime. This issue remains one of the biggest activism measures in sports history and has opened the door for others to speak up about racial injustice and police brutality against African American individuals.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
