There are several ways in which computers have made the world both more safe and dangerous. Computers have significantly increased overall convenience for individuals and companies across the world, but have also created more opportunities for criminals to carry out harmful acts.
Benefits of computers include: easier/faster access to information for research, easier communication, and more jobs. Easier and faster access to information has benefited many areas like schools, medicine, and even the environment. Students and teachers are able to find information for class much faster and from a larger amount of sources. Medical personnel can share findings more efficiently and also teach more effectively. Increased use of computers have also called for things to be more digitized which leads to less paper being used since information can be shared electronically. Decreased paper is better for the environment as deforestation is not only bad for wildlife, but also human health and earth sustainability.
Consequences of computers include: higher criminal activity opportunity, increased concern for sensitive information safety, and increased cost for computer advancements and protection. Higher access and use to computers have created more opportunity for criminal activity. People are able to hack, modify and steal information which can have major consequences for the individual, businesses, and other processes. Increased criminal activity using electronic devices like computers have also created new fields and businesses to prevent electronic harm. Cybersecurity, as a means of study and career opportunities, is still fairly new and ways to protect devices are growing every day. Other jobs computers have created include retail sale of computers and manufacturing of parts. While creating jobs and opportunity is important, the overall stress for individuals and businesses can be frustrating. Businesses in particular spend hundreds of thousands of dollars trying to keep private information safe like bank info, personal identification, and health records, but still are not 100% protected.
Computers are another way that reflects how our world has changed, but also how technology can leave society more vulnerable.
