There are currently a few options that ODU offers for those looking to pursue a major in cybersecurity. Cybersecurity can be defined in many ways and is a growing field with a wide range of opportunities. Four options, in particular, are Cyber -Operations, Cybersecurity, Cybercrime, and Enterprise Cybersecurity. Courses under these four majors allow students to get a general study of cybersecurity by taking core classes involving interdisciplinary thinking and cyber law or cyber ethics.
The Cybercrime major teaches more basic information technology and computer science classes and requires students to take criminology and criminal justice courses to get a foundation that brings together the frameworks and perspectives of criminal justice with frameworks and perspectives of cybersecurity to prepare students for various careers.
Enterprise Cybersecurity is the newest major and is offered in the college of business. This major allows students to apply cybersecurity and IT principles specifically in the framework of a business.
Cyberoperations is more engineering based and is for students involved in higher-level cybersecurity efforts so it is challenging in terms of math requirements.
Under the branch of cybersecurity, students will find that there are many approaches to addressing a cyber problem and that there are many fields of study to choose from under the cybersecurity umbrella.
There are many ways to be involved in cybersecurity and pursuing a degree whether a bachelor’s or master’s is not the only way. In addition to the majors offered at ODU there are certificates that students can achieve that will allow them to grasp information about cybersecurity and work in that field if that is their interest. No matter how far into cybersecurity the student is looking to go they will find that the importance of cybersecurity is growing as technology advances continue and there are many opportunities that will allow them the practice the responsibility of protecting their personal information.
