Any time people are trusting others with their personal information there will be risk for ethical violations. There is a huge amount of trust the person giving the data gives to the company storing the data. People working in that company need to have an implied integrity that they will not violate this trust and use this information for personal gain. Companies have to store people’s financial information as well as personal identification information and potentially medical information. There are also issues of companies using people’s personal data for marketing or selling that information to other companies without the individual’s consent. Whenever an individual is guided to give their personal information there need to be very strict instructions about what they are consenting to. Companies need to be transparent with what they will be using this information for and make sure that the public is aware. There also needs to be strict guidelines pertaining to what is expected of employees and a zero tolerance policy for violations. One breach of trust can ruin the company’s entire reputation and turn the public against it.

Cyber threats in the US vs other countries are different based on technology and our cyber laws. Some of this is based on more advanced countries being able to exploit more vulnerable countries due to their lack of cyber security. There are also differences between countries that have very restrictive laws about what they allow to be shared to the public and what access citizens have and countries that have a more open policy about the Internet. Where citizens have more opportunity there is also more of a chance to expose vulnerabilities. Threats to cyber security are so important because the effects can be extreme. There can be security breaches as far as national security or major damage done to the economy. The US Department of Defense talks about the threats of other countries and hacking as it could expose secrets and harm infrastructure. This is why it’s so important to stay on top of all threats and constantly be improving technology and preventative measures.
