Engineers make cyber networks safer because of all the research and careful planning involved in developing new technology and all the testing engineers do to ensure functionality and safety. Engineers are always watching for new vulnerabilities and developing new strategies for defending against known threats. Testing new potential ways hackers could attack systems or new potential vulnerabilities can help engineers be ready to handle any potential threat that could come into the system. Preparedness is a vital tool that can be used to help thwart potential attacks and mitigate the damage if the attack is successful. Engineers can also use their knowledge of what they’ve learned and educate other employees to be more thoughtful and aware of any concerns. Education is also important if employees see a potential risk they will know how to handle it before damage is done or stop the damage as soon as possible.

The overlap between criminal justice and cyber crime is very significant. Crimes online need to be investigated and prosecuted just like any other kinds of crime. There are significant consequences to crimes perpetrated in the cyber world and there need to be clear guidelines on punishments for committing these offenses. As technology becomes more advanced the types of crimes committed in the digital world can become more advanced as well leading to the need for new laws.

These concepts are explored in our class because we are learning about the different types of crimes that could potentially be committed and how to prevent them. If the crime can be prevented then it should allow for the person who attempted to commit it to be identified and prosecuted. Learning about the potential crimes and consequences of a cyber attack on the perpetrator helps us learn about the criminal justice systems because it shows us how the process works.
