Cyber security has increased the chances for deviance in the workplace because with the advent of new technology and the need to put more and more of information online there is temptation for hackers to exploit these systems and get people’s data. Employees would know what information is stored in the databases and what could potentially be exploited. People that work for the company would also know what kind of security protocols are in place and the potential to circumvent these security measures. Companies need to have clear and concise rules about what will happen to violators of security breaches and the expectations the company has for the integrity of each employee.
There is also potential with employees that they will fall victim to hackers outside the company and leave their place of work vulnerable to cyber attacks. Phishing emails are a big way that hackers can obtain sensitive information or expose company computers to malware. An employee could be fooled by one of these emails and then the hacker has access to company systems and information. This is why it’s so important for businesses to make sure employees are aware of potential phishing threats and prepare employees to be on guard for them.
Another potential problem for the workplace could be unhappy employees who don’t care if their computer system gets hacked. They may intentionally leave their computer exposed or carelessly leave their systems vulnerable. If there is a flaw in the computer’s security system hackers can exploit that and obtain information. Whether intentional or not this could create a huge issue for companies not only within themselves but potentially outside the company depending on the type of data breaches and security violations.
It is important for employees to know company cyber security guidelines and follow protocol in order to keep their information safe as well as potential client information safe. There need to be clear ethical expectations as well for any violations, big or small.
