After reading the article “11 Illegal Things You Unknowingly Do on the Internet” what I believe to be the top 5 serious out of the list and my reasoning behind it is below:
- Illegal Searches on the Internet – Illegal searches on the Internet can be serious for many different reasons. Trying to circumvent privacy, get access to things they should have access to, or learn something that should not be available when malicious intent is the motivating factor. The browsers attempt to block or flag such behavior so it can be reported to authorities but that isn’t always the case. This is at the top of the list because if used the wrong way, the illegal search can result in ways to accomplish/bypass all the others listed.
- Collecting Information about Children – Collecting information on children just sounds inherently bad. There are few reasons a non-family member could have that would justify the need to collect any information on a child through the internet that a direct question to the parent wouldn’t fulfill. With a child’s lack of ability to give informed consent, it would seem exploitative and sneaky to seek such information. Regardless, the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) makes such acts illegal without the aforementioned parental consent.
- Faking your Identity Online – Faking your online identity would start any interaction off as a lie. It can lead to fraud or deceptive tactics to steal money, data, or personal property. If there is a need to hide from what you are doing, it probably should be getting done.
- Sharing Passwords, Addresses, or photos of others – Without the consent of the person who’s information is being shared, a major violation of their privacy is being committed. You wouldnt be privy to reason why they wouldnt want photos or there address accessible to anyone and can potentially cause them harm should it get in the hands of the wrong person.
- Bullying and Trolling – Bullying and trolling had many instances that have created psychological trauma, dangerous online environments, and in extreme cases, bodily harm and loss of life. Although it may be thought of as simple actions, they can have lasting consequences for all parties involved
