Maslow’s hierarchy of needs is a psychological theory proposed by Abraham Maslow in 1943 that suggests human beings have needs arranged in five levels. The theory states individuals would need to satisfy lower level needs before they can focus on higher level ones. The levels from the bottom to the top, our psychological needs, safety needs, love and belonging needs, esteem needs, and self-actualization.

This theory could be applied to technology in a multitude of ways. At the first level, psychological needs can be met with the use of the Internet. Access to the information about food, medical needs, or places to find lodging. I was able to find where I am currently living, using the Internet to search for suitable places. 

With the second level, individuals look for safety and security. Technology plays a role in ensuring safety with the use of passwords and the constantly updating of security vulnerabilities with systems to keep unauthorized individuals out. I stay on top of updating the software and firmware of all of my devices and applications and use a password manager to store my password so I don’t use the same password for multiple accounts. 

After psychological and safety needs are met, technology, facilitates, social connections, and relationships. There are a plethora of social media apps, websites, and companies to foster relationships and build social connection, such as LinkedIn, Facebook, and Instagram. I’ve used Instagram to stay in contact with friends that aren’t nearby anymore, make new friends, and foster new working relationships. 

The fourth level relates to gaining recognition, self-respect, or the respect of others. Technology can be used to accomplish this level with the use of platforms like YouTube, or accolades and prestige are created with every click and view of someone’s video. The platform gives Plex as creators get more followers, encouraging them to continue making content to further their following. 

At the last level, individuals are seeking to realize their full potential. Technology provides tools that allow individuals to explore the things they are truly passionate about. They can express themselves to the fullest and make their wildest dreams come true. I was able to do this after watching a few videos about sailing. The sport had peaked my interest and I had set out to learn more about it. Having all previous levels met, I was able to get the training need to start the journey, and I ended up being able to purchase a boat and liveaboard for 3 years!
