I selected this meme mostly because it was the first that made me laugh out loud. Also, I think this photo does an excellent job of simplifying the role the lysosome plays in our cells using personification. I came across several other comical photos in my search that were unfortunately not completely correct. Luckily, the one I selected is correct in that lysosomes do contain enzymes that break down waste materials and pathogens. And in some instances, when a cell is damaged or dying, lysosomes can rupture and release their enzymes, which can break down the cell from the inside out. While the goofy guy personifying the lysosome says, “I’m not afraid to destroy myself”, he is describing the cellular process of apoptosis. Overall, I think the method used in this meme, taking a complicated mechanism and applying it to a relatable and comical scenario, is very effective in quickly educating someone what a lysosome does and how.
