Technology has drastically changed and improved from the 1900s to now. We went from just having computers to having phones, smart watches, smart televisions, electric cars, etc. You can pay at the store by just tapping your phone and you can unlock your home door by clicking a button on your phone. The way that people communicate changed from writing letters or talking in person to texting or calling on the phone. This makes living life and communicating more effective, but there are also downsides. People can fall victim to cyberbullying, cyber harassment, financial and sexual exploitation, privacy violations, and much more.
With cyber technology improving, cyberbullying and cyber harassment are at an all-time high. Cyberbullying is online bullying that can involve threats, name-calling, or sharing private information. Cyber harassment is similar and uses electronic communication to harass, stalk, and threaten people. Cyber technology allows these things to happen, and it is easier than ever. Social media platforms like Instagram, Snapchat, Twitter, and TikTok allow offenders to find their victims very easily.
Financial and sexual exploitation are also on the rise because of cyber technology. Social media platforms like the ones stated previously are also used by offenders looking to exploit people. Offenders use technology to run their phishing scams and identity theft which can be used to exploit people for money and the same goes for sexual exploitation. Technology can be used to distribute pornography, groom minors, and even trafficking people.
Lastly, your privacy is at risk. You can fall victim to hacking and your information can be doxed. This can expose your name, address, passwords, credit card information, etc.
