Computers and more modern-day technology came about in the early 1900’s. Originally being used for mathematical calculations; it quickly became something much bigger than that. Now we have different kinds of technology like phones, tablets, smartwatches, smart televisions, artificial intelligence, etc. Technology has a positive impact on our lives because it helps us personally and professionally. It helps solve real-world problems, improves human welfare, allows us to communicate more efficiently, etc. With the positive, comes the negative. This new technology comes with crime better known as cybercrime. This is exactly what it sounds like, crimes committed via technology. With all of this new cybercrime, we must find ways to find justice and stop this from happening.

You can see an overlap between criminal justice and cybercrime when investigating, prosecuting, making new legislation, and even cybersecurity safety measures. When there are cybercrimes like phishing, cyberstalking, cyber terrorism, or hacking, they need to be dealt with. Law enforcement has no choice but to get involved and investigate. When investigating evidence is found, cases are built, and it is time for the perpetrator to be prosecuted. More overlap is seen when cyber crimes are taken into account and new legislation is put in place. When legislation and laws are put into place, cyber crimes are defined, penalties are established, and then you can figure out how to easily prosecute the perpetrators. In June of 2022, Joe Biden signed two new cybersecurity bills into law. This was an attempt to improve the United States cybersecurity and educate cyber workforce employees on cybersecurity and the skills they need. The last overlap is seen when implementing security measures to prevent cybercrimes from occurring in the first place or making it harder to commit them. Law enforcement and cyber security professionals work together to put these systems in place and educate the public about what to look out for and how to prevent an attack.

As you can see, the criminal justice world and the cybercrime world go hand in hand. Helping each other and as a result, we are safe and protected from cyberattacks that can be life-threatening.
