Workplace deviance, also known as counterproductive work behavior” is when you are voluntarily doing things and acting in a particular way that violates your workplace’s rules and normal. The direct and indirect costs of workplace deviance is in the billions in the United States alone. As cyber technology is becoming more advanced, now you have to factor that into the equation. Workplace deviance is now at an all-time high, and it will continue increasing. Data breaches. Social media distraction, lack of integrity, unauthorized access to confidential information are just a few ways cyber technology has created opportunities for workplace deviance.
Cyber technology, becoming as advanced as it is now, allows data breaches to occur. A data breach is when personal information of employees, customers, or anyone in between is disclosed inappropriately. This puts everyone involved at risk.
Social media distraction is probably one of the biggest current examples of workplace deviance. Everyone is so obsessed with technology and social media, that they are putting their work on the backburner to engage in social media. Everyone is guilty of doing this, I know that I am. This is one reason why workplaces do not allow the use of cellphones or technology while on the clock, but this does not entirely stop the issue.
The last two examples are the lack of integrity and unauthorized access to confidential information. I believe these two go hand in hand. Employees can gain access to confidential information that can cause data breaches and just damage their integrity as well as the company’s integrity. Being able to access this unauthorized information puts everyone involved at risk.
