Cybersecurity is the techniques or methods to protect yourself from cyber-attacks. Whether you are protecting yourself from password attacks, getting your credit card information, or doxing. The four majors I think relate to cybersecurity are information technology, computer science, computer programming, and criminal justice.
According to the ITAA, information technology is “the study, design, development, implementation, support or management of computer-based information systems.” Cybersecurity relates to this because attacks on these information systems happen all the time, if not daily. You need cybersecurity to protect the information systems. A lot of people think that information technology and cybersecurity are too similar to be different topics or majors, but they are different in their own ways.
Computer science is the study of computers and computer-related things. I don’t have much to say about the relativeness of these two majors, but they are both heavily based on computers. Cybersecurity is a specialized field that is a branch of computer science. Some other popular fields that stem from computer science are software engineering, computer graphics, and computer architecture.
Computer programming is exactly what it sounds like and is often referred to as coding. It is translating instructions into a language that computers understand so they can carry out certain tasks. This relates to cybersecurity because you use coding in cybersecurity. You may need to code so you can develop effective security measures that can detect and prevent cyberattacks.
The last major I chose was criminal justice. Criminal justice is the way to deal with those who are accused of committing crimes. The main focus is on the prevention, prosecution, and punishment for whatever crime that was committed. This relates to cybersecurity because cybercrimes are committed, and people need to be persecuted and punished for those crimes. The concept of cybercriminal was coined and is the study of crimes that occur in cyberspace.
