In my first semester of college, I attended a meeting with my academic advisor so we could pick what courses I would be taking this semester. To complete my general education requirements, I am required to take a technology course. I am a nursing major who knows nothing about technology so when I was looking at this long list of different technology classes, I was overwhelmed. Truth be told, nothing stood out to me, but I did remember that a few of my friends are cybersecurity majors, or they are interested in that field. So, when I saw the cybersecurity, technology, and society course, it piqued my interest. Now that I am currently enrolled in this course, I did some of my own research, read the module one readings, and watched the module videos. I learned that cybersecurity is the techniques or methods used to protect yourself, your devices, and your private information from cyber-attack threats. It is interesting how anyone at any time can experience a cyber-attack and many already have. Some common types of cyber-attacks I read about are malware, password attacks, and phishing. You need to know how to properly protect yourself, or others if this is your career, from these attacks. Your phone number, email, address, credit card information, passwords, etc. can be stolen and then you are no longer safe and protected. In high school and at home, I was never taught how to protect myself so this course will be helpful with that and broaden my horizon.
