One ethical issue with storing electronic information about individuals is the sale of personal information to other companies. For example, a company that collects people’s data and information sometimes will sell that information to third party companies for a price. These third-party companies will buy personal data for a price and use it for research, sales, crime analysis and different marketing strategies. This is unethical because most of the time people don’t even realize their own personal data is being sold and used. Another ethical issue would be companies that store data for a long time for no reason. This can cause many problems for people in the future because people change everyday but what they did online five or ten years ago could come back and ruin their lives. Even if someone has a bad history and are trying to change themselves, they cannot go forward with their lives because companies have dirt on them from years ago. However, it is useful to store data of people in relations to taxes among some other things. A third ethical issue is if there is a data breach for whoever is storing personal data and information about other people without alerting those who’s data was breached. This is wrong because someone’s personal data could be stolen, used, and sold all with malicious intent without the original user ever finding out. For example, Facebook stores millions of peoples data and they have had breaches without telling the users, so the users can’t do anything and won’t do anything about the stolen data. For my last example of an ethical issue with storing electronic information about individuals is the use of information how it shouldn’t be used. Some companies will say what they are using data for and use it for a completely different reason. This is unethical because the people who allow their data to be used are not aware of their data being used for other reasons and it is especially unethical if that data is being used for malicious reasons or personal gain.
