When looking at workplace deviance, it is the purposeful, ill spirited, attempt at sabotage by invoking various issues in the workplace. This can span from aggressive behavior to the use of workplace politics to gain the upper-hand. The use of cyber technology can enhance many of these methods of sabotage and can sometimes be difficult to handle when trying to rectify the situation. One way would be the use of social media. In this day and age, almost all of us have some form of social media that we use on the daily and in some instances, these can hold pictures and other posts that isn’t something that would be appropriate for our co-workers or employers to see. Malicious people could take these pictures and other posts and use them as a form of blackmail to achieve whatever goal that they have. This could be to get you fired, or to simply attack you because they don’t like you. Social media could also lead to unproductive behavior. Since it is easily accessible through various means, such as a cell phone, computer, or watch, it can be very distracting and lead to an employee not working efficiently and costing the company money. These are less extreme cases of workplace deviance that can be resolved by restricting cell phone usage or screening employees’ social media prior to hiring them, however, in a more extreme case that would require legal action, workplace deviance could come from someone that is well versed with the network and has the credentials to log in and out as they please. This could lead to a breach or compromised data that could result in the loss of productivity, thus causing issues for the company. While this person could face legal action, no one would know if the data was sold to a third party. This would then cost the company even more money because they would have to change log in credentials and tighten security to avoid any future breach or compromise of the network.
