Compare cybersecurity risks in the U.S. and another country.
Cybersecurity is important to all countries however the risks between different countries may vary. The U.S. is a very big target for many other countries and terrorist groups. Because of this, the U.S. is constantly under attack and must quickly develop new ways to protect ourselves. That is our cybersecurity’s main purpose, to protect us. The U.S. must protect many different categories called risk categories that includes economic, environmental, geopolitical, societal, and last but certainly not least technological. While we do face frequent and heavy attacks, per the Global Cybercrime Report produced by SEON the US ranks Top 3 in cyber-safety with a score of 8.73, due to its low cyber security exposure and strong legislation passed to prevent this cyber-crime back in 2020 now we are not even top 10. Although we are not top 10 of the high-risk countries either being removed from the list of top 10 low risk countries demonstrates the need for improvement. Data focused on 2022 found that the three most common types of cybercrime in the US were phishing and pharming, personal data breaches, and non-payment and non-delivery. EU organizations implement additional security based on increased risk while the US companies implement additional security based on increased threat. While the bases of this journal is to compare US cybersecurity to other countries there is very limited information on the types of attacks and protections of other countries. Therefore, I chose the #1 high risk cybersecurity country per the Global Cybercrime Report created by SEON in 2023 Afghanistan. Afghanistan’s cyber-safe score is 5.63, this score is composed of three components; national cyber security index, global security index, and cybersecurity exposure index. “In 2009, MCIT established the first Cyber Emergency Response Team (CERT) in Afghanistan and it was officially named as AFCERT. The mandate of AFCERT was to fight against cyber threats and crimes and provide awareness and solutions on cyber security to the government and private sector. In its first two years of operation, AFCERT submitted an official report to
the MCIT senior management regarding an upsurge in the cyber and electronic crimes in the
country. In order to fight the said crimes, it was vital to conduct a risk assessment of all
government ICT infrastructures and come up with a solution to mitigate those risks.
AFCERT’s proposal on preparing a draft of Cyber Security Strategy for the country was
accepted by the MCIT and ICT Council and to this end the MCIT and ICT Council
established a committee.”
